Whether you are planning to relocate, retire, invest, or work remotely, Portugal offers several pathways to legally reside in the country. With its welcoming climate, secure environment, and modern infrastructure, Portugal has become one of the most attractive destinations in Europe for international residents.
As of October 2023, the immigration process is overseen by AIMA – Agência para a Imigração e Mobilidade, the new public body that replaced SEF for all matters related to residency and migration.
For EU/EEA/Swiss Citizens
Citizens of the European Union, European Economic Area or Switzerland do not need a visa to enter or reside in Portugal. However, if staying longer than 90 days, they must register their residence.
- Proof of employment, self-employment, study, or sufficient financial means;
- Health insurance;
- Application at the local Câmara Municipal (Town Hall) for a Certificado de Registo de Cidadão da UE.
After five years, permanent residency may be requested.
For Non-EU/EEA/Swiss Citizens
Non-EU citizens must obtain a residence visa (valid for four months) from a Portuguese consulate in their home country before applying for a residence permit in Portugal. The most common visas include:
- D1 Visa – Work Contract Visa: For individuals with a valid employment contract from a Portuguese company.

Application Process
Visa Application (Before Arrival): Submit your application at the nearest Portuguese Consulate or Embassy in your country.
Arrival and Residence Permit: Once in Portugal, schedule an appointment with AIMA to request your residence permit. The initial residence permit is usually valid for 2 years and renewable.
Permanent Residency and Citizenship: After 5 years of legal residency, you may apply for permanent residency or Portuguese citizenship, subject to language and integration requirements.
